Deep within every person is the basic desire to be a provider and to secure a good living. When the “basic needs” of food and fire are met, a deeper and more creative drive kicks in.
For a lucky few, relatively speaking, the drive to create aligns with the opportunity to provide, and an entrepreneur is born. And when all the necessary elements of success come together – when the blood, sweat and tears are thoroughly mixed – entrepreneurialism is fully rewarded.
Starting a web business is one approach to both provide and create as an entrepreneur. And when done right, it’s one of the most lucrative ways to generate a living in the Internet economy.
For over 25 years flirted with the idea of being an entrepreneur and owning my own business. (That’s easy to do when you live 12 hours a day in an 8×9-foot office cubicle). In the world’s largest semiconductor company, some of my colleagues built chips; some built tools; I built teams – and I was very successful at it. And though I worked with some of the finest people in the high-tech industry, not one of them was an entrepreneur. I didn’t fully appreciate that fact until I left the corporate word.
I give my youngest son the credit for my departure from corporate America. That’s him on the far right when he was three years old. We were standing on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea on the last day of our 18-month relocation to Israel. My wife snapped this picture as the sun went down.
I found this picture again 10 years after we returned home, and it shocked me out of a self-induced professional coma. I had lost my passion for my work. I had lost interest in the direction I was going. This picture of my children –my youngest son now a teenager – jolted me to the sudden realization of the example I was setting for them. And for me, that example was not a pretty sight.
Fast forward two years. Now my office is at home and I work with industry leaders in the online entrepreneurial world. I’m still valued as a team leader and mentor, but now it’s by those who aim to become a successful entrepreneur and work from home. My leadership skills and mentoring are sought after by those entering the online industry and by those looking to take their business to the next level. My life is more invigorating and exciting than ever before.
And here’s the best part: it is completely within reach of anyone who has the drive to succeed and the basic capacities to gain new skills. That’s what drives me now; it’s the passion of my profession. It’s the driving force behind my efforts to help others be successful entrepreneurs, leaders in their communities and heroes in their own home.
