Internet marketing, commonly referred to as I-marketing, web-marketing, online-marketing, or e-marketing, is the marketing of any product or service over the internet (1). This can include, but is not limited to: advertising via web pages online, blogging, social networking, email marketing, search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), web banners and banner ads. These types of marketing further incorporate other forms of marketing, including: influential marketing, affiliate marketing, local Internet marketing, and “blackhat” marketing. Because Internet marketing encompasses such a broad range of marketing techniques and strategies, it’s not difficult to see why so many companies employ some means of Internet marketing into their marketing campaigns.
Aside from its versatility, why use Internet marketing?
In a report conducted by The Nielsen Company earlier this year, results showed that since 2003, online video view has increased by 339 percent. Furthermore, in that same time period, time spent on online video websites increased by 2,000 percent. Time spent on social networking also increased by a monumental 73 percent. Results also showed that companies continue to advertise online. Although, these numbers have dropped slightly due to the recession, The Nielsen Company expects a steady increase, as the economy gets better.
With the statistics mentioned above, now is a great time for Internet marketing businesses. Yes, much of the marketing industry is moving mobile; however, that goes hand-in-hand with the Internet marketing industry. The numbers above also show that consumers are still widely using and increasingly using the Internet. Traditional Internet Marketing (i.e. e-mail marketing) is phasing out, but there are new forms to try and new ways to create marketing platforms and campaigns.
Some other advantages to using Internet marketing include its easiness to track progress. Because many web banners and banner ads are paid for on a “pay-per-click,” “pay-per-play,” “pay-per-action” basis, companies can track these and see which advertisements and which marketing strategies prove to be most profitable.
Traffic is a huge key to Internet marketing’s success. Because more and more individuals frequent the Internet each year, because the cost continues to decrease while the technology increases, Internet marketing campaigns can reach broader and further targets, as well as very specific targets, which couldn’t otherwise be reached. This gives Internet marketing a huge edge.
Going along with the above, the cost for Internet services has come down greatly, as technology has provided faster and more secure connections. More consumers operate on a high-speed connection nowadays, as opposed to the first dial-up services offered in this industry. This overcomes the obstacle of slow services, which would prevent individuals from viewing higher functioning websites.
Schools are educating young children from the age of pre-school and kindergarten in how to use the Internet. This provides another positive for the Internet marketing realm, as targets can be reached at younger and younger ages. Plus, where children are taught to use this tool at such young ages, they will have the knowledge and capacity to use the Internet (providing more traffic for marketers and more targets), which will help to eliminate another obstacle of reaching a target market (i.e. the older generations).
The advantages to Internet marketing are invaluable and numerous. Each year, companies spend billions of U.S. dollars on this industry to promote products and services. Marketing companies will continue to bring in profits, as they utilize the multi-services and capacities of Internet Marketing. Internet marketing businesses can make money.
