If you’re looking to start your own business and wanting a work from home opportunity, affiliate marketing may open the doors for you. This can act as a healthy, supplemental income or as your primary source. In addition, it can help you earn some money while you are in the process of deciding want you really want to do.

Affiliate marketing involves companies selecting individuals to act as affiliates and market their products and services. Upon completion of the sale, or contact, or however the company sets up the compensation scale, the affiliates are paid. Businesses enjoy this type of marketing, because they do not expense any marketing funds until there is an absolute sale. This saves them quite a bit of money. For individuals looking to earn money or have their own business, there really isn’t much to it.

Where do I start?

There are two directions to begin with. You need to get your website in order. Will you simply create a blog with content about random things or specific ideas? What will you do? Or will you create a website that is strictly links and products? My suggestion is to have a direction with your blog. For example, create a blog that has content about something you are passionate enough to write about or blog about each product. Feature a different one each day. If you simply post a bazillion links, people are going to get lost in the shuffle. It will be information overload and way too much. However, if you create a professional website with some color and strategic outlay of various links or advertisements for your clients, this will be much more eye catching.

Another element to consider when building your website is how you will advertise. There are many individuals who work in affiliate marketing. In order to be successful, you need to be competitive and have some type of marketing strategy. I would suggest optimizing your website via search engine optimization. I would also suggest advertising your website through various channels on the Internet. Without these techniques, your webpage may fall far behind.

The second direction to consider as a top priority is finding companies that will allow you to be their affiliate. Networking plays a key role here. Look at contacts you have already made. Work within your social networks online. Attend events to gain more contacts. Contact companies about becoming an affiliate. Do everything you can to make these contacts. Because companies may want to see your site before allowing you to represent them or their products, you may want to have that set up already.

Upon completion of the website and your initial affiliates, consider compensation. Pay per click gives you about 5 to 10 U.S. cents for each click. Pay per contact will offer you more money, depending on what company you work for. However, in the long run, the greatest amount of revenue will come from pay per sales. While you may have to wait longer for these, companies will typically pay more (again, depending on the nature of the product or service). Considering what you are acting as an affiliate for, negotiate for the best option.

The last item on the agenda is monitoring of your website. Be sure that it works properly at all times at a quick pace. Be sure that you are up-to-date. Work on developing more contacts on a regular basis. Be on top of the companies you work for. If you made a sale, be sure they pay you.

Affiliate marketing can be prosperous, but it’s one of those residual incomes that takes a little while to build up. This type of business may be profitable to start at home as a supplemental income, and then, once it picks up, you can use it as your main source. Be patient.
